National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

A new solar installation for the newly built National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

While no two solar panel installation jobs are the same, one of the two biggest challenges in any solar panel installation job is the size of the installation and the access.  From smaller business installations to large scale, multi roof systems, this most recent job completed by our solar panel installers for the new build project at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland ranks among one of our biggest projects completed in Scotland.

Working closely with both the Mechanical & Electrical Contractor and the Main Contractor on the site, the installation project covered not one, not two but SEVEN roof spaces.  Each requiring its own inverter.  In total, there were 1621 solar panels installed that will help generate over 520,000kwh of green energy per annum for the site.

Opened in the summer, the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) is an all new, world-class facility in the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland.

The 11,500m2 carbon neutral facility helps to support manufacturing, engineering and associated technology businesses of all sizes and is the new home for the NMIS Manufacturing Skills Academy. Designed by HLM Architects and built by Morrison Construction, we were delighted to be a part of the project installing the solar panel system for the new facility.

Commercial Solar Installation Job

The 1621 solar panels installed were all 380w JA Solar Panels.  We have used JA Solar on many solar install jobs because they are some of the very best performing, reliable and durable solar panels on the market.  The solar panels were fitted onto the seven different roofing areas using a Renusol Mounting System and were connected to seven individual Solis Inverters.

Because of the scale of the job, we used Synergy Lifting Solutions to assist with the safe transportation of the panels onto the roof.

We want to thank Glasgow Greentech for the materials supplied on this project.

Green Energy

Once completed, the solar panels form a 615kwp system which generates over 520,000kwh per annum for the site.  Due to current grid constraints, the system has had to be set to a 200kwp export limit.

Solar panels present a great opportunity for businesses in Scotland to not only reduce their energy costs but also make money from the electricity generated from their solar panels.  While this new system may have an export limit set on it, they will still be able to profit from the sale of green electricity back to the national grid helping to reduce their ‘Return On Investment’ time considerably.

The Challenges of installing Solar Panels

The main challenge with this job was the number of roofing spaces that required solar panels to be installed.  This meant that, on top of the sheer number of panels required for the job, we had to use a crane lift to safely move the panels from the ground onto the roof.

To ensure that the project was completed successfully, we worked closely with the on site M&E and Main Contractors to ensure that our work was able to be completed around other existing building work going on.

While this may be one of the bigger projects we have worked on, our experience of solar panel installations up and down the country on projects big and small meant that this was no great issue for us. We have worked on old buildings, industrial buildings and new builds with integrated solar panels being part of the actual roofing system so we were able to successfully complete our work with minimal issues.

The benefits of Solar Panels for Business

More businesses in Scotland are turning to solar panels and green energy than ever before as a real way of controlling their energy expenses.

The volatile nature of the energy market has put a strain on many businesses in Scotland and having solar panels installed on the roof of your business will allow your company to control your energy expenses and help to turn the solar panels into a revenue stream.

You may think that because your business is based in Scotland that solar panels won’t work. But with the latest in solar panel technology, as long as there is daylight, solar energy can be captured and used. Scotland has anywhere between 1000 and 1500 hours of sunshine per year depending on where you are.  And those are all hours that can be used to generate energy collected from the sun.

Solar Panels for Businesses

The process of solar panels is quite simple.  Solar Photovoltaic (PV) modules harness energy from the sun and generate this into electricity for use in and around your office building. Solar panel system can provide energy all year around, even on a cloudy day in Scotland. Solar Panels produce energy on site which can significantly reduce your businesses reliance on the national grid and the volatile and fluctuating energy prices that businesses up and down Scotland have seen so much of in recent years. By installing solar panels, your businesses can contribute to pushing the country towards net zero and relying on electricity produced using fossil fuels. And as this is self-generated it will lead to a decrease in your business energy costs too.

Peak times of sun matching electricity peaks

Electricity is in demand the most between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm.  And this is also when your business can take the most advantage of the sun.  Electricity generated from solar panels during these times can lower the cost of the electricity you need to purchase from the national grid and lower your business outgoings.

Finance Options for Solar Panel Installations

For some businesses, the initial cost of solar panels can put them off. There is however another option. We provide Solar PV Power Purchase Agreements for businesses that want the benefits of solar power but may not have the financial capital available to afford the installation of a solar panel system.

Your business can take advantage of green energy immediately with a Solar Power Purchase Agreement so that you don’t have to invest in the initial cost of purchasing or fitting solar pv systems. Instead, you can commit, through a PPA, to buying discounted electricity directly from us and the solar panels we install at your commercial property at an agreed upon rate for a fixed length of time. We take care of the rest.

What is a PPA?

A PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a financial agreement which allows companies like yours to purchase solar energy generated electricity from companies like us with NO UPFRONT COSTS.

This allows your business to take advantage of solar energy without having to invest in the initial purchasing and installation costs. It also means that you do not have to worry about the maintenance of the solar panel system as we take care of that as well.
