How to lower energy costs in commercial buildings

Savings in a business environment are always a wise and savvy investment in your time.  A simple change here and there can save a company hundreds of pounds, if not thousands simply with an annual review of expenditure.  And one area that should always be under review is how to lower your business energy costs.

Lowering your energy costs can include simple options, quick fixes and investments in your companies future with clearly defined long term benefits.  Which is why we have put together a list of some top tips and suggestions for your business to lower their energy costs.

1 – Shut it down. Encourage staff to turn off and shut down equipment properly.  Photocopiers, computers….there is a lot of electrical devices which are left on in ‘standby mode’ when the office day is complete.  Yet they are not fully off and are still consuming energy.  It may seem like a small thing but as the saying goes, take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.

2 – Software Management. If your staff are not able to power down their computers, why not invest in power management software which can help.  After all. every single flat screen computer left on standby during the night and weekends can consume more than £20 worth of electricity a year.  Now just think about how many computers are in the office…

3 – Switch to energy efficient LED lighting.  In the office, replacing the inefficient lights in the building (including emergency lighting which has to be on 24/7) can help cut down on energy costs.

4 – Take advantage of sunlight.  While switching to LED lighting is better.  Using natural light is best.  On a nice sunny day, do you need the lights in the office on?  If not, switch them off.  You are instantly saving on your companies energy costs.

5 – Office heating bills.  We don’t want your employees to freeze or roast but ensuring that your office is a comfortable temperature throughout the year means you are not spending too much on heating bills and air conditioning electric bills.

6 – Invest in Battery Storage Systems.  Electricity is cheaper during the night time when there is less demand.  If you can store electricity from the grid during the night and use it in the daytime when electricity is at its most expensive, you will be making big financial savings every working day.  Battery storage systems are easy to integrate and can grow with the size of the company.  And if you use more energy than the battery storage system can give you, you automatically and seamlessly switch to the national grid for the rest of the day before the battery storage system can recharge in the nightime.

7 – Turn to solar power. Going green is on everyone’s minds these days and being able to harness the power of the sun for free electricity is a great way to help reduce your eco impact while also lowering your companies energy bills. Solar panels can be fitted to your business roof and provide your office with completely free electric energy.  And don’t worry about being based in Scotland.  Yes we may not have as much sun as say Australia.  But we have more than enough sun and daylight hours to make solar panels a very reliable method of power generation.  And what makes it even more appealing is that if you interlink it with battery storage systems, you can charge the battery storage system during the day, use the electricity generated by the solar panel and sell the rest back to the national grid – making a profit. So rather than just another way of lowering your energy costs, you can turn it into a money maker as well.
